    Actually, there's good and entertaining listening on any analog cell network, a lot of people use cells to yap away from their friggin' backyard etc and don't move around a lot... they VERY frequently yap out telephone numbers, beep out passcodes for VMB's and things like that, and even blab credit card numbers, when they're ordering that XXXXL black lingerie.


    Getting more sophisticated, that litle BZZZP! that cell towers emit when a fone's signing off is a chunk of info which I think is either the MIN or the ESN, of the fone, this is easily picked up with an interface to your computer or laptop, although this is getting rarer, there has been a market for these, which people would pick up by sitting around and picking 'em up, often from passing cars on the freeway, and sell for a few dollars each to cloners.


    The top level of all this fun is a Cellscope, which is a really bad felony for a regular citizen to possess, cellfone companies have 'em legally needless to say, this device can follow a phone as it goes from cell to cell, and tell the physical whereabouts of the caller. Tsutomu Shimomura, the computer security expert helped track down Keving Mitnick with one of these he built himself with a UHF reciever and HP 200lx palmtop computer. As he wasn't and isn't a cellular fone company agent it wasn't legal for him to have it, and this is just one of the many legal irregularities in the capture and imprisonment of Mitnick. The best advice I can offer if you want a Cellscope is to read up on Mitnick, especially the book Shimomura co-wrote. The info's in there if you know your stuff.

    For all of you morans who ask about codes and devices that allow you to eavesdrop a conversation:

    ------- The Cellular Phreaker's Physics guide -------

    A. Besides being illegal and immoral, cellular eavesdropping is *REALLY* hard to do (especially on digital systems). Unless you have some kind of amazing connection to the backbone of a cellular provider - you'll never be able to eavesdrop a call that isn't from a nearby cell. You can't be in Manhattan and listen to a conversation taking place in Queens. Even if you have some fancy phreaking device, you must be able to "see" the cell on which the conversation takes place.

    B. Another thing which makes cellular phreaking hard is the very essence of cellular communication - the fact that the call is being transferred from one cell to another, whenever the connection gets poor. So even if you traced a certain call, you need to be able to "follow" it to the next cell (hoping that the next cell will be within reception range).

    C. Usually you will able to hear only one side of the conversation + sometimes a quiet echo of the second side. If you want to hear both sides you need to "see" both sides (I use the term "see" because it means pretty much the same as seeing something with your eyes. after all, the visble light is an E-M wave as well).

    D. To listen to conversations made by a specific mobile you need to have a device that translates the information being sent on the control channel. This will give information of the voice channel and mobile number (actually NAM). Unless you have such a device, you can only do "random" phreaking, which is pretty much listening to whatever converation you find. This means scanning all of the voice channels until you find a conversation (which is usally terminated or transferred once you find it...).

    E. To listen to a conversations on a digital network YOU *MUST* HAVE A DIGITAL DECODER (of the same system - TDMA/CDMA/GSM/whatever)!!! Your digital mobile may be used for this purpose, if it supplies a certain code that allows you to decode a certain channel.

    To conclude: The most easy to do cellular phreaking, is a random phreaking on an analogue network (AMPS/NAMPS). The channels for such networks are well known, and you don't need a digital decoder. The only necessary equipment is a radio scanner for the desired frequencies. If this is all the equipment you have, the actuall phreaking will be time consuming and irritating - you have to constantly scan all of the channels, and when you do find a conversation it is usually terminated or transferred to another cell in a short while. If you have a device that can be used fot some kind of activity monitoring (such as a spectrum analyzer or a control channel translator) it would make it more easy to do.
    Doing anything beyond that requires the proper devices and knowledge.

    I've been to all of the codes pages, but I guess that all the phones I "acquired" are too new or something. Anyway, if anyone has info on programming the Audiovox MVX-four-eight-zero,

    I dont know the first thing about cell phones. A guy
    offered me a cell phone w/ one THOUSAND pre-paid minutes for one hundred seventy five dollars. Its not a store just a guy. Im told he sells like Fifty per week.     alright.... have any of you ever heard of the acronym RTFM? It stands for Read The Fucking Manual. A definition from the Jargon File:

    Hi there,
    I have a couple of Motorola StarTAC 6000 series.
    I've opened one of them and I've found that they have the necessary hardward to do "vibrating" mode ringing, even when the software doesn't have this feature.
    Does anybody knows a way of enabling this feature in the 6000 series?

    Before you start, you are going to have to determine when your phone was
    made, or if it has ee3. If your phone is 95XX (made during or after
    1995), follow step 1. If your phone was made before 1995, follow step 2.



    Step 1
    ======

    1. Turn on the phone, and within 10 seconds, type :
    FCN + 0 + 0 + * + * + 8 3 7 8 6 6 3 3 + STORE

    2. Now, you should see flashing digits. Type # to
    enter servicing level. Now, you should see 'US on
    the screen.

    3. Once you see 'US on the screen, type 08#. You
    should now hear static (since you have not specified
    a channel to monitor)

    4. Now, you need to specify a channel. To do this,
    type 11XXX#, whereas XXX is the channel number.

    5. Since your phone is 95XX, you can only monitor these
    channels :
    11xxxx# Tower Freq. Mobile Freq.
    #300 Tx 879.00 Rx 834.00 0300
    #333 Tx 879.99 Rx 834.99 0333

    Most stores bend ya over and take what they want as soon as you walk in. Sucks but you can't change it. At OfficeMax you can look on their computers and see what the margin it. They don't like it but so? the login is usually 'store'(creative people workin' there, that's for sure) and the pass is a 0 followed by the store number i.e. 0253. You can get to a UNIX shell too. From the main screen its 1 then login then 7 then either 1 if you know the UPC or SKU or 4 to look it up. As always if you bitch about the price rape you might get it cheaper.     Hey TAK, never be suprised at what Radio Shack sells stuff at. When I worked there, my manager would surf through items on the Dell that they had in the back room, and he would show me the cost price vs. the sell price. Most of the time the Gross Margin bordered around 68 percent. This is why Radio Shack will never cease to exist. They turn profit off of those silly little stores every year. They don't sell products, they sell freindliness, and a willingness to help. That is something you can't find at them other retail stores that charge fairly.

    I got a cell phone! I got a cell phone! Wanna know where I got mine TAK? The thrift shop. They had a huge ass bag phone for 50 bucks (max wattage I am sure), and a smaller one (the one I got, maybe weaker) for seventeen bucks. I love it. I soldered on a new cigarette lighter socket (it was busted) and it came right on. I also got two batteries. They are the old skewl' multi-purpose twelve volt batteries that are common to AV equipment. Anyhow, I powered the sucker on, it flipped into "ROAM" mode, and then proceeded to tell me to dial *611. When you dial this, you get a list of options on how you would like to pay for the call. Credit Card number? Calling Card number? Etc. All of these options are entered by you, and no operator is needed. What a country! Anyhow, thrift shops rule! Especially when they have cell phones and dont know what to charge for them. Hehehe

    Anyone ever screwed with one of these? They rock. I was up at the Rat Shack the other day and I noticed they still sell them, and at 50 bucks cheaper. When I worked there, several years back, they were 149.99, and now they are 99 bucks. I used to hold it up to the window as people shot by the store front on their cell phones and then try to tune them in, but the frequencies jumped quite a bit, and would only limit your scan search. Anyhow, anyone have one they would want to sell?

    hey i tried to do it with my motorola and it worked... well sort of..
    this is a phone i recently had disconnected so it has no service. Can i stillhear conversations.... what is weird is that even though its not hooked up it still has signal strength meter workin,,,,
    i went through the steps and it worked well i had static but when i put the channels in i heard nothing but static... are those codes good for anywhere in the us? also i had trouble determining if my fone was made prior to 95 but on the sticker on the back next to the fcc id it had ee3 right next to it...
    any help appreciated... as well as maybe info on how to clone or other cool tricks with this fone since it is disconnected now.... i moved up to a nokia digitalplus.... i got a woodgrain case it looks cool....... are digital phones secure from scanning?

    ======

    1. If you see that your phone has 3 pins when you
    remove the battery, follow this step. Note, your
    phone also has to been made before 1995.

    2. Remove battery, and place a small piece of tinfoil
    in the middle pin to short the middle pin out.

    3. Put battery back on, and turn on the phone. You
    should now see flashing digits. Follow sequences

    I just bought one of those philips isis phones. Pretty much the deal is, you buy the phone, and each month you buy a $$ amount of calls. You call up this 800 number and through an automated voice, enter the code on the card, and they then tellyou the codes to put in your phone. I'm assuming that the codes are just run off of sometype of logrithim and that nothing as far as how much money you have "left" on you phone is actually transmitted to them from the phone. I'm kind of working of figuring out how to trick the phone that it has time left and to let me use it. I haven't found ANY programming info on these, but if you have some send it my way please.     If the limiting factor (in motorolas, allowing only control channel scnning), is a software one. Then shouldn't be possible to reverse engineer the little bastards and edit the code?, i know you can hook up to a pc, and rewrite stuff, but will htat work? anybody know?

    If your phone can monitor only those channels it means you have a newer phone. People used to listen in on others cellular conversations using the test mode. Motorola caught on to this and changed the software so that while in test mode you could only recieve the control channels.

    I don't think i saw the phillips commercail, but i saw a local vendor (maybe it was a local thing but with phillips fones) advertiseing a deal, where you paid all air time in advance. they would then ship yo uthe fone pre-activated. at htis point i think (without even getting to credit fruad yet) that prehaps you could order one, clone it to an old fone, then get a refund. just don't actually use the fone any, then say something to the effect of "I baught it for a friend, but htey didn't want it" or "fuck you, I dodn'y want you r peaice of shit fone". with luck, it mighyt be possible to get the refund, and then use the clone for a good amount of time before they catch on.

    Anybody know if there is truth to the rumour that newer motorola's can only monitor channels, 0300, 0333, 0385, 0799, and there are like two others, but i forget? And, i know its osunds dumb,, but do i need the fone activated in order to channel scan (on any cell, not just moto's) it seems to me, that the fone should be able to intercept channel traffic with its own transciever, like a plain old fashioned scanner. is this totally wrong or what?

    Regarding the Sprint store phone, the only downside to it is that the phone is restricted to local calls. And you cant forward or bill calls to it. And you cant resell it for use because they have a master unlock code you need to reprogram it. Plus the phone will show up as stolen. Not that the person you might sell it to would know this.

    If you want info on programming phones call Airtouch at 1-800-543-8069. You will need to social a local store's dealer ID # and their store #. It is easy, call up Rat Shack and tell them you're the new guy at the other store and you dont know what to do because the manager went to lunch. Then call up and Airtouch will tell you how to program just about any phone. They will even fax you a programming sheet. You can even run someones credit and set up a phone for yourself. Have fun.

    Okay, here is the answer to your questions with (once again) more information than you probably need and or want. :) Radio Shack gets these small pamplets shipped UPS along with promotional materials. These pamphlets are called Plan-o-grams. They must abide by these suckers as best they can. Rat Shack understands that no two stores are shaped the same, so they some up with a couple combonations of what you can do. Anyhow, the little booklet has all sorts of nice glossy photos of the little stands and wall shelving. The stores MUST abide by these booklets. DM's (Disctrict Managers) are required to go store to store on a regular basis and ensure that the stores look like the booklet pictures. Keep in mind that the pictures come from Fort Worth Texas, and they are taken inside of a store that doesn't exist. This store is there for the sole purpose of overpaid dickheads who set up empty boxes and snap pictures of them. It actually is inside Tandy headquarters. So anyway, these booklets sometimes offer two different display types for expensive items. They typically show the item sitting out in the ope
