Frequently Asked Questions

No, this isn't an attempt to look all official and webby.  Over the years I've run this archive, I really have been asked some questions, frequently.  So, I put up a Frequently Asked Questions page.  Neat how that works, hmm?

Why do you collect images of Celebrities With Phones?  Why not Celebrities With Toasters or something?

I've always been into phones and telecommunications technology.  This archive started as a folder on my computer.  I had the idea to make a parody telephone-related ad, and set about looking for images to use in it.  I never got around to doing that ad, but I soon found myself continuing to save pictures to that folder now and then.  Soon, I had enough to start a decent sized archive, and so I did.

Do you own the copyright to any of these images?

No.  These images are collected from various sources including the Internet, film, television, and print media.  As such, any copyrighted images remain the copyright of their various owners.  It's not my intent to infringe on anyone's copyright, and if anyone finds an image they own and wish me to remove they need only contact me and I'll promptly remove it.   This is purely a personal hobby of mine, and in no way makes any amount of money for anyone.  In fact, I have to pay my host to keep it up.

The only totally original images I have at this point are these two images of 2600 Magazine's Emmanuel Goldstein, and this photo of myself with "Boondocks" cartoonist Aaron McGruder, which were taken at the H2K2 con by myself and my friend Grey.  So, should the question arise, they're our property, and we hold them as copyleft.

Why do all the filenames begin with "cwp_?"

I noticed how many image archives, at least a few years ago, added their site name, URL, or other info directly into all their images as captions.  I'm no fan of that, since it degrades the image quality.  However, I thought it'd be neat for people who downloaded an image from this site to have a non-destructive reminder of where they got it.  So, the abbreviation for Celebrities With Phones is in all the filenames.  And, you're always free to rename your files.

And while I'm at it, what's with the "_th" at the ends?

The _th suffix denotes a low-quality thumbnail version.  So, if the full-sized image is cwp_thelmatodd.jpg, the low-quality thumbnail version is cwp_thelmatodd_th.jpg.   My thumbnails are resized to be 100 pixels high, with whatever width preserves the original's aspect ratio.

Why does the credit on some images read "CWP?"

That would be an image that was screen-captured or scanned for this site, rather than coming ready-made as a JPEG from elsewhere on the Internet.

What tools and/or scripts do you use to create and/or generate your pages, thumbnails, and stuff?

My html is usually hand-coded with multiple text editors, mostly DOS edit.  Don't ask me why.  At this point it's all pure html, no scripting languages.  If you'd like to recommend some script which would work well with the format of this site, please email me.

My image scanning, thumbnail resizing, and all other graphics work is done in Paint Shop Pro.  My thumbnails are 30% compressed JPEGs, and if an image is scanned by me I'll save the original as a JPEG with 10% compression.

How can I help?

How nice of you to offer!  You can help in many ways.  First of all, you could look around in the name index for TV or film based images which aren't sorted into their respective film or show in the title index, and let me know what should go where.   An image qualifies as "from" a show or film if it's a screen capture, publicity shot, or behind-the-scenes shot from a specific title, featuring actors "in character."

Even better, you could keep an eye out in your travels across this Internet of ours for celebrity phone pictures, and send them my way at submit@rtf.kracked.com.  Include the email address or site URL you would like your credit on this page to be posted with.  If you would rather I not post that info, be sure to let me know that as well.  Also, there are no commercial attachments on this site, and I will never sell your address or URL to anyone for any reason.

Do you have any set standards for image submissions?

Well, it has to be a celebrity with a phone, which to me means someone generally well-known to a significant amount of people, for any reason.   Sadly, that discounts that one picture of your dear Aunt Jebedissa you were hoping to donate.  However, there's a great telephone-related image archive at http://telephoneart.com which contains, amongst many other neat things, images of various people on the phone.  They might be able to give dear old Aunt Jebedissa the net exposure she deserves.

I'd like to limit this site to photos of celebrities, not drawings or illustrations, but will sometimes make exceptions for things like movie poster art.

I won't post any indecent pictures.  That's that.  This is the Internet, which is no place for naked people!

Other than that, I don't think I'd turn down a celebrity phone image unless it were really bad quality, or something.

How often is the site updated?

Whenever I get submissions, and I find the time.  Generally, regularly.

How long has this site been up?

I put it up in December of 1999, with a total of about 20 images if memory serves.

Celebrities With Phones, serving you since the 20th Century!

Is time an immutable forward progression?

I prefer to think of it as more of an illusion, or perhaps a mere factor in a spacetime model of relativistic causality and determinism.

Hello!  We just found your great site, with its content and everything, and thought you'd like to add our link / banner / cheesy award graphic / etc..

Note to all ad merchants:  Go back to ruining the rest of the web.  I won't post ads here.  No exceptions.

May I link to your site, or an image on it?

Sure!  I always appreciate links.  You can link to this archive's URL, which is http://rtf.kracked.com/cwp.html.   Or, http://connect.to/cwp, or http://celebritieswithphones.tk, which redirect to this site, and which will remain valid should I ever move the archive or something.   Or, you could link my main page at http://rtf.kracked.com.

I've got a banner, if you'd like to use it.  It's the big ugly animated one down at the bottom of this page.  Here's some html code you can use..

<a href="http://connect.to/cwp"><img src="http://rtf.kracked.com/cwpani1.gif" width="468" height="60"></a>

If it's an individual image in the archive you want to link to, that's okay as well, I have no problems with hyperlinks directly to the image.

"Bandwidth thieving" hasn't really become a problem for me yet, because my dear, sweet web host, Kracked, has some of the best prices and terms of service of any host you'll find.  Just to keep the risk down, though, I would prefer that the larger images be linked to, rather than loaded inline somewhere else.  And if you're putting an image on your own website, it's always more polite to save it to your own webspace whenever possible.

May I use an inline image from your site as my buddy icon / message board avatar / blog icon / whatever?

For things like that, you'd want to use a thumbnail.  They're only a few kilobytes each, so you can throw them wherever all you like, I don't mind.

Just try and avoid using the biggest half-meg images I have as your webtv sig or something, that could hurt.  Please save the bigger stuff to your own space whenever possible.

If you find an image on another website, do you ask permission to use them, or do you just swipe the things?

If it's a non-commercial site, I always try to ask permission whenever possible.  Of course, there are almost 600 images these days, and I'm bound to have missed a few, so please don't be offended if you find an image from your site here uncredited.  Should this happen to you, just email me and I'll credit your site ASAP.

If it's some big site like Yahoo or the BBC, I suppose, in all honesty, I'm less likely to ask.   But, I still try to credit where they came from.

One last question.  Can I see the archive?

Sure!  Just click one of these to browse by last name... (A-F) (G-L) (M-R) (S-Z)

Enjoy!
